Mission

The Bureau of Communicable Disease Control is charged with the task of controlling and preventing the spread of Communicable Diseases in the District of Columbia. This is done through both active and passive surveillance, timely investigations of cases and outbreaks and providing intervention such as prophylactic medications and vaccines. The Bureau also provides recommendations and consultations to other District agencies and private providers.

Bureau Description

The Bureau is comprised of three programs: 1) The Immunization Program seeks to reduce and eliminate morbidity and mortality due to Vaccine Preventable Diseases by maintaining high immunization levels in children and high risk adults with particular emphasis on children less than two years of age. 2) The STD Control Program is charged with the responsibilities of decreasing the incidence and prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases and related syndromes in the District of Columbia by interrupting the transmission of disease. 3) The Refugee Health Program ensures that all refugees entering the District of Columbia and asylees referred to the program receive a Health Assessment and follow-up care.
