It is estimated that over 60,000 individuals in the District of Columbia have a substance abuse problem. This figure represents nearly 12 percent of the general population. In addition, forty percent of the 1.2 million annual emergency room visits in the District of Columbia are related to alcohol and drug abuse. Aware of the challenges presented by this growing problem, the Department of Health (DOH) created the Addiction Prevention and Recovery Administration, otherwise known as “APRA.”
Mission
It is the mission of the Addiction Prevention and Recovery Administration (APRA) to promote and enforce the highest quality regulatory standards for delivering services related to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD) addictions; to prevent ATOD addictions; and to identify, treat and rehabilitate persons who are addicted giving priority to residents of the District of Columbia.
APRA serves as the “one-stop” agency for the prevention and treatment of substance abuse in the District of Columbia. Formerly known as ADASA (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services Administration), APRA’s primary purpose is the prevention of substance abuse, while identifying, treating and rehabilitating individuals within the District of Columbia. APRA provides oversight, ensures access, sets standards and monitors the quality of services delivered as a result of an ongoing continuum of substance abuse prevention and treatment.
Providing residents of the District of Columbia with a comprehensive and accredited range of services, APRA is staffed by highly trained and compassionate professionals. As a result, APRA offers effective residential, outpatient and aftercare programs as it collaborates with community-based organizations, schools and religious institutions to help those in need.
The APRA philosophy is multi-faceted and multi-targeted, including a results-oriented methodology that utilizes a science-based approach to substance abuse prevention and treatment. Hence, APRA combines three fundamental elements to provide the most effective and innovative strategies in the city’s fight against alcohol, tobacco and other drugs:
- Prevention
- Treatment
- Aftercare
APRA’s services are extensive, including:
- Prevention and Youth Treatment
- Central Intake, Assessment and Referral
- 24-Hour Detoxification Services
