Mission
The Preventive Health Services Administration (PHSA) stimulates and coordinates the development and implementation of disease prevention programs in the District of Columbia. These efforts involve the assessment of DC health needs, development of programs and policies to meet these needs, and evaluation of the results.
Program Description
The Preventive Health Services Administration is the main advocate for preventive health services in the District of Columbia. These services are divided into three categories:
- Disease or injury prevention
- Secondary prevention (efforts to diagnose diseases or injuries at their earliest stages; treatment to avoid complications)
- Tertiary prevention (efforts to reduce complications and disabilities resulting from diseases or injury)
These activities are carried out by:
PHSA's goals are to:
- Lead preventive health efforts in the District of Columbia.
- Ensure that disease prevention strategies are effective and efficient.
- Develop preventive health policies.
- Develop and use scientifically based health data to support decision-making.
- Reduce risky behaviors associated with communicable and chronic diseases.
- Reduce chronic diseases through increased screening and other risk factor referrals for breast, cervical, colon, prostate, and rectal cancers, and other chronic diseases.
- Reduce Communicable Diseases through increased screenings, STD infections and immunizations and the maintenance to Refugee Health Program.
- Develop an asthma education, outreach, and referral program.
