The Board of Nursing regulates registered nurses, practical nurses, and advanced registered nurses in DC, including nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, and nurse practitioners. The Board also advises the Mayor, evaluates qualifications, administers exams, and recommends standards and procedures. The Board issues licenses; receives and reviews complaints; requests investigations, conducts hearings, and issues subpoenas; examines witnesses; administers oaths; and makes an annual report. Members must file personal financial disclosure statements.
The Board consists of eleven DC residents, including a chair, appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the council: seven licensed RNs (of whom one shall be certified in each of the following: nurse-midwifery, nurse-anesthetists, and certified nurse practitioner), two LPNs, and two consumers. Professional members must have been engaged in practice for at least three years preceding appointment. The consumer members must be at least 18 years old, not be health professionals or in training to become one, and may have no household member who is involved in providing health care. Licenses expire on June 30 of even years.
