According to the 2000 census, Latinos number 45,000 persons, making up an estimated 8 percent of the population of the District of Columbia. Studies sponsored by APRA have estimated that 16 percent of Latinos are substance abusers.
The Office of Special Population Services (OSPS) within APRA has worked since 1998 with the Office on Latino Affairs (OLA) to address the substance abuse needs of the Latino community of the District. Through this partnership came the APRA/OLA Continuum of Care. Community based organizations now provide much needed substance abuse services to Latinos in DC.
OSPS also works to ensure a high level of cultural competency within all of APRA’s services.
