*This booklet will give you general information about how to become a nurse aide in the District of Columbia and give you sample test questions that will be asked during the testing process.

All nursing homes must verify that aides they employ or are considering for employment are eligible for enrollment (or re-enrollment) as nurse aides and have no record or resident abuse, neglect or misappropriation of resident's personal property.

Verification has been made easier by the use of a 24-hour interactive telephone system and web site access: www.asisvcs.com.

All nursing homes are required by law to notify the Department of Health of any alleged incidents involving abuse or neglect of residents or misappropriation of residents' property by a nurse aide.

The Department of Health will investigate all allegations and if substantiated will notify the nurse aide of its finding and the aide's right to an appeal. If the allegation is substantiated and upheld, the nurse's name will be added to the Nurse Aide Abuse Registry. These names are forwarded to all nursing home administrators, notifying them of nurse aides' placement on the abuse registry.
