Program Objectives and Priorities

By the year 2010, the Maternal and Child Health Administration intends to:

  • Increase to at least 70 percent the proportion of pregnant women who begin prenatal care in the first trimester.
  • Increase to at least 80 percent the proportion of pregnant women who receive adequate or more than adequate prenatal care.
  • Reduce the infant mortality rate to no more than 10 deaths per 1,000 live births.
  • Increase to 60 percent the proportion of women who are breast-feeding during the early postpartum period.
  • Increase male involvement in pregnancy prevention and family planning, as measured by the increase in the number of health providers offering outreach, education, or services to men.
  • Reduce suicides to less than 10 per 10,000 people age 15-19.
  • Reduce pregnancies among females age 15-17 to no more than 107 per 1,000.
  • Reduce to no more than 15 percent the proportion of individuals age 15-19 who have engaged in sexual intercourse before the age of 15.
  • Reduce to no more than 50 percent the proportion of individuals age 15-17 who have ever had sexual intercourse.
