Mission
The mission of the DC Cardiovascular Health Program is to build unified and effective approaches to preventing, controlling, and limiting the morbidity and mortality associated with cardiovascular diseases in the District of Columbia.
Program Description
The Cardiovascular Health Program is located in the Department of Health, Primary Care Prevention and Planning, Bureau of Chronic Disease. It is funded through a Preventive Health Block Grant and is supported by other programs such as Diabetes and Tobacco Control.
The Program is involved in several activities and has several planned for the future. Currently, the Program is conducting a comprehensive assessment of cardiovascular diseases in the District of Columbia. It plans to use the information to solicit additional funding and plan for future initiatives. The Program is also entering a public/private partnership with a national pharmacy and a nation-wide program for women (Sister to Sister). The partnership aims to provide health information and services to District residents in a state of the art facility that is located in the heart of the community. The partnership will address a wide range of diseases including, but not limited to, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Goals of the Program
- Goal 1: Develop scientific capacity to define the extent of cardiovascular disease in the District of Columbia.
- Goal 2: Develop and coordinate partnerships to strengthen and increase the scope and effect of cardiovascular disease interventions.
- Goal 3: Develop an inventory of policy and environmental strategies to enhance cardiovascular health.
- Goal 4: Provide technical assistance to other Department of Health programs and community-based organizations to develop interventions in community settings.
- Goal 5: Develop population-based strategies to promote cardiovascular health.
