The implementation of the Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act (HIPAA) will affect the
current manner in which Providers/Submitters conduct
Medicaid related transactions with the DC Medicaid
Management Information System (MMIS). In particular,
the Administrative Simplification component of HIPAA
defines the standards required for the different
transactions, code sets and identifiers outlined
under HIPAA. To address the transition to the new
regulations, the DC Department of Health’s Medical
Assistance Administration (MAA), which manages the
DC Medicaid System, has established the HIPAA
Remediation team. The team, which is comprised of
representatives from MAA, DC HIPAA PMO, and the MMIS
Fiscal Agent (ACS State Healthcare), has been
assembled to ensure a seamless conversion of the
MMIS to the HIPAA-compliant standards without
interrupting existing business operations.
