What is Project WISH?
Project WISH (Women Into Staying Healthy) is also known as the DC Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (DC BCCEDP). The program provides women with annual Pap tests, pelvic exams, and clinical breast exams. Women 40 and over are also provided free mammograms.



Who is eligible for Project WISH?
Women who:

  • Are 18 years of age and older
  • Live in the District of Columbia
  • Have little or no insurance
  • Have limited income or financial resources

What is a mammogram?

When should I get a mammogram?
Women ages 40 and older should have a screening mammogram and clinical breast exam every year. According to the American Cancer Society, women ages 20 to 39 should have a clinical breast exam every 3 years.

Who should get a Pap test?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • All women who are or have been sexually active, or who have reached age 18, should get a Pap test.
  • Women who have passed menopause should still continue to obtain a Pap test.
  • After a woman has had three or more consecutive, satisfactory, normal annual exams, the Pap test may be performed less frequently at the discretion of a clinician.
