Mission
The mission of the Division of STD Prevention and Control Program is to interrupt the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) -- with an emphasis on gonorrhea and syphilis. Our long-term goal is to lower the incidence and prevalence of STDs by integrating clinical services; epidemiology; the Laboratory Reactor Program; the Gonorrhea Screening Program; the Chlamydia Screening Program; and the Information and Education Program.

Program Description
The following Services are delivered and activities performed in the Southeast STD Clinic:

  • Testing, Examination, Diagnosis, and Treatment: The Clinical staff performs routine STD testing, examination, diagnosis and treatment for: Syphilis, Gonorrhea (including drug resistant strains), Chancroid, Granuloma Lnguinale and Lymphogranuloma, Vernereum, and other sexually transmitted diseases and conditions. The Epidemiologic follow-up consists of: primary, secondary, and early latent syphilis cases diagnosed at the Southeast STD Clinic, and cases diagnosed and reported by other health providers and private medical communities, cases of gonorrhea from any source, cases of gonococcal pelvic inflammatory disease (GPID) from selected target hospitals and from the STD clinic, persons reported as having serologies reactive for syphilis, persons testing positive for HIV in the Southeast STD Clinic and persons testing positive for HIV by the private medical community when requested by those providers.
  • Confidential Counseling, Contact Tracing, and Partner Notification: Disease Investigative Specialist staff offer confidential counseling, contact tracing, and partner notification. HIV counseling and testing are available free at the STD Clinic. Patients who test HIV positive are counseled and referred to early intervention services.
  • Statistical Analysis, Reporting, and Follow-up: The Division of STD Prevention and Control's Surveillance Unit gathers, analyzes, and distributes statistical data about STD infection in the District of Columbia. The unit monitors the reporting of positive STD lab results; initiates follow-up for patients who may require medical attention or counseling to the epidemiology field staff; and maintains a central file on syphilis morbidity. The phone number is (202) 727-6408.
Several hot lines are available to help callers with questions concerning various kinds of sexually transmitted diseases. Select STD Hot Lines for more information.

Syphilis is Back!
